I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but it's really too bad about Twitter. For all its faults, it was a solid platform for sharing ideas and ways to support marginalized communities. Some of the best jokes I've recently heard and shared were on Twitter (I know, sad.) Job opportunities were discovered on that site as well as stalking a new band's or artist's portfolio. I really, really loved discovering new artworks on that site. I got into comics when reading the Jem and the Holograms adaption and twitter was a great place to see what other projects the creators are doing, as well as discovering other comic book artists and writers. It's less of a pain than Instagram (Instagram hurts my feelings) and it’s more nuanced than Facebook (which is not saying much but I digress.) There was just so much info regarding voter's rights, ways to help during a natural/man made disaster, GoFundMe's for people struggling and retweetable information for a missing person that other sites just don't have a handle on. Of course, we all survived before Twitter and in all honesty, we’re probably better off without most of it. There were many aspects of Twitter that were just unnecessary, including but not limited to supporting fascists, the toxicity towards BIPOC, misinformation, people confusing hate speech for free speech, stan wars and alpha males. But twitter had aspects that made it bearable.
A few things I will personally miss on Twitter: Black Twitter, therefore: -Slick clap backs -Memes -Links to people doing research on our history -Leslie Jones live tweeting -The replies under memes under a celeb’s embarrassing statement I’ll also miss having quick access to supporting different marginalized communities, which included buying jewelry from an Alaskan indigenous single mom and retweeting her products any time she had a launch (she’s also on Instagram thankfully, Beads by Blanche) I think one of the more important aspects of Twitter is what TikTok has grasped onto, people are candid. People love to overshare on that platform! Sometimes it’s a problem! But! There’s hardly any pretense and if it seems like you’re pretending, you will get called out. Or even if you’re not pretending and you just want to share how you spend your mornings having a coffee in the garden with your husband, Twitter won’t let you enjoy it. Ah my miserable oversharers, you were fun while it lasted. Black Twitter, you will definitely be missed.
